TGL Changes Match Rules Mid-Season

In recent months, the biggest golf organizations in the world are giving great focus to improve the product of professional competition at the highest level for fans. It’s crucial for these tournaments to keep the fans engaged as they ultimately drive the sport forward and improve it for the better. Many of these developments have been released this week and will inevitably trickle down to organizations who haven’t to push golf competition to its limits.

The TGL has changed up their hammer rules mid-season ahead of their President’s Day Triple header matches due to backlash that teams were holding on to the press for the entire match. Now, each team will start with three hammers and can be thrown once per hole per team. If both teams throw the hammer on the same hole, the hole will now be worth 3 points.

The R&A has followed the USGA’s path to give LIV Golfers qualifying criteria for the Open Championship. The top player in the top 5 in the individual standings, not otherwise exempt, will now earn a spot in the major championship.

Taylormade golf has ended its partnership with Dustin Johnson after an 18 year run, starting with the company back in 2007. This come after DJ was spotted without a Taylormade hat on at LIV Golf Riyadh. As far as we know, Johnson is now a free agent in terms of equipment.

LIV Golf revealed that the league will continue to host events in Adelaide, Australia through 2031, the league’s most popular stop on the circuit. This gives us insight into the longevity of LIV and that they intend to continue the league long past the PGA Tour merger.

Bryson DeChambeau kicked off season 2 of his popular series, Break 50, with a bang. The first three-man pairing of the series with Garrett Clark & Grant Horvat lead them to shoot 48, finally breaking through for the first time in the series.

Patrick Reed made a hole in one at LIV Golf’s party hole, hole 12 at The Grange Club in Australia. In similar fashion to the 16th at TPC Scottsdale, the crowd goes wild and the layers are showered in alcoholic beverages.

We got new in-hand photos of the new Taylormade P790 irons for 2025 following the announcement leak at an overseas equipment show just a few weeks ago. No word on the release of this club just yet.
